GRACE
âIâll take the green rabbit; my granddaughter will love it.â
The woman has a big smile on her face as she hands me the money, and I pass over the rabbit.
âI hope she likes it,â I say.
Itâs a few days later, and as promised Jesse has arranged a stall for me at the market.
Itâs a small market under the big elm trees in the little town square. Iâve got a table set up with my knitted wares on display.
Itâs been fun gossiping with the other stall owners. They all remember Gran and have been telling me stories about her.
I feel a pang in my heart. I donât know why I havenât been back here in so long. We used to come every summer as a kid, but as I got older, I got busy with my own life.
Gran always came to visit Mom a few times a year, so I would see her then. Now I wish Iâd made the effort to come up here more. After city living, itâs a welcome change of pace.
Just after midday, the other stall owners start packing up. I gather up my remaining goods and am packing them into a box when I hear Betty, the lady whoâs been selling jam next to me, take a sharp intake of breathe.
âWell, hereâs a cool drink on a hot day.â She nods appreciatively at the approaching figure. âIf I was fifty years younger, Iâd have me some of that. Hell, if I was thirty years younger, Iâd still give it a go.â
âBetty, donât be so crass,â says Judith crossly, whoâs been selling gift cards for the local church.
âOh, come on, Judith. I see you fanning ourself every time he walks into church.â
Judith looks away embarrassed, and Betty chuckles an easy laugh. She was my Granâs best friend, and I can imagine them cackling together.
Jesse saunters over, and Betty gives him a saucy look. âYou want some of my jam, honey?â
He gives her an easy smile. âNo thanks, Betty. Iâve still got a jar in the cupboard.â
âWell, you come and see me anytime you need some more.â She looks between us. âBut I guess youâre not here to see me. Youâre here for the young lady.â
She gives me a wink, and I want to die of embarrassment.
Jesse turns to me, his eyes dancing with laughter.
âHow did it go?â
I thought he was good-looking working with his shirt off, but when heâs flirting with the local old ladies, heâs absolutely adorable.
âI almost sold out,â I tell him. âThey loved the rabbits. Iâll have to make some more for next week.â
His eyebrows shoot up. âSo youâre sticking around?â
I try to read his expression. Is he happy that Iâm sticking around? âYeah, for a week or two. Not a lot to go back to.â
I put the last few things into the box and hoist it onto the table.
âLet me take that.â He grabs the box before I can protest. âI want to show you something.â
I follow him to his van, and he throws the box in the back.
